More Than Just Beauty: The Emotional Effects of Caffeine

In recent years, most of the research on coffee and caffeine has revolved around their physical impact on your health, whether it’s reducing wrinkles in skincare products or preventing diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. But there’s another side to the debate: the emotional effects of caffeine and the impact that it can have on your mood and emotions.

And, as with most things related to caffeine, there’s a fine balance to be struck here. Drink a moderate amount, and caffeine can have a positive effect on emotions. Go overboard, however, and it can lead to problems.

We spoke with the skincare and beauty researchers at Callyssee Cosmetics about what you should know about caffeine and how it can impact your mood (in addition to helping address skin concerns).

#1 Alert & Awake

This is the most well-known emotional impact of caffeine, and there’s no question that drinking it in moderate amount can lead to heightened alertness and focus during your workday.

However, as with most things related to caffeine, there is a flip side to this if you drink too much. Veer into the 5 to 7 cups a day range, and suddenly you’re looking at the possibilities of irritability, anxiety, and other issues that can throw your focus off in a hurry.

The earlier in the day you drink it, the better so that it doesn’t interfere with your sleep, and food with your coffee helps to stave off irritability.

#2 Mood-Boosting Potential

Another interest aspect of the effects of caffeine and coffee is that they can serve to put you in a better overall mood. Several studies have shown that moderate coffee consumption led to a reduced risk of depression.

But interestingly, the same “flip side” seems to occur with depression if you drink too much coffee. Overconsumption has been linked to an increased risk of depression.

Stay in the 1-2 cup per day range if possible to keep caffeine’s effects optimal far away from your bedtime and stay on the safe side. Still sleepy? You probably need more sleep or some exercise to pump up your overall energy levels, or consider cutting down the sugar in your diet.

#3 Exercise & Weight Loss

One interesting secondary effect of caffeine on mood has to do with its positive impact on exercise potential and weight loss. Caffeine has been shown to increase exercise endurance, improve recovery after workouts and also help people lose more weight in general. These, of course, are all factors that can help improve mood overall as your general health and well-being increase.
